Cogut Institute for the Humanities

Cogut Institute Fellows Seminar

Fellows of all ranks and disciplines meet every Tuesday during the academic year to present and discuss work-in-progress in a collegial environment.

The seminar gathers fellows of all ranks — undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs, and faculty — as well as visiting scholars, across the humanities and humanistic social sciences. Participants meet every week to share work-in-progress and then lunch. The composition of the seminar varies from year to year, based on application submissions, the review process, and award acceptance.

This is a unique opportunity to learn from and build community with a wide range of scholars, enrich individual research, and lay the groundwork for future teaching or collaboration.

2024–25 Fellows Seminar

Become a Fellow

Members of the Brown University community interested in joining the seminar may apply for one of our fellowships.

The fellowship carries a $1,000 research fund, 1 credit for the academic year, and access to collaborative work and community space in Andrews House. Rising senior honors students are invited to apply.
Fellows are relieved of teaching duties in their department and receive office space and access to community space in Andrews House. Students currently in the 3rd, 4th, or 5th year of their doctoral program may apply to hold the fellowship in their 4th, 5th, or 6th year, respectively.
Faculty who are eligible for a semester sabbatical that they wish to extend to an academic year of leave may apply. Fellows receive a one-semester leave on special assignment, at full salary and benefits, to augment their sabbatical leave within the same academic year. They also receive a $2,000 research fund, spend a semester in residence at the institute, and teach a course related to their fellowship research.

Brown University departments may also propose searches to appoint postdoctoral fellows.

Fellows are appointed jointly at the Cogut Institute and in the departments for a period of two years and enrich Brown University’s curriculum and research culture by bringing to campus expertise in a range of humanities fields. The fellowship covers salary, standard employee benefits, and a $2,000 per year reimbursable research fund. The institute also provides departments up to $1,500 per fellow for search costs.
