Brown University departments can propose postdoctoral appointments to meet ongoing or emergent instructional needs. Postdoctoral research associates are appointed jointly at the Cogut Institute and in the departments. Individuals may not apply to the Cogut Institute for postdoctoral positions: the institute does not recruit postdocs directly.
Postdoctoral research associates enrich Brown University's curriculum and research culture by bringing to campus expertise in a range of humanities fields. In turn, postdoctoral research associates have the opportunity to gain additional teaching experience and develop their research while seeking permanent positions.
In Fall 2025, the governing board of the Cogut Institute for the Humanities will be considering departmental and program proposals for:
- up to 2 two-year appointments of Mellon Postdoctoral Research Associates.
- up to 2 two-year appointments of Postdoctoral Research Associates in International Humanities.
The award covers salary, standard employee benefits, and a $2,000 per year reimbursable research fund. The award also provides up to $1,500 per research assoaciate for search costs.
Mellon Postdoctoral Research Associate searches are awarded to departments or combinations of departments/programs emphasizing one of two priorities:
- The case for an appointment in a new or experimental area that may constitute a position description for a future faculty search.
- The need for instruction in a traditional field not adequately covered by the relevant department or combination of department(s) and institute(s)/center(s)/program(s).
International Humanities Postdoctoral Research Associate searches may also be defined in one of these ways, with the expectation that the search field will include an international dimension. In International Humanities searches, the recruitment of scholars from outside North America is encouraged but not required.
Mellon and International Humanities Postdoctoral Research Associates are scholars who have received their degrees from institutions other than Brown University within the last five years and pursue work in the humanities, the humanistically-oriented social sciences, and new fields with close ties to the humanities. They are appointed to academic departments, where they teach one course per semester. They are also affiliated with the Cogut Institute where they participate in a weekly seminar with faculty, graduate, and undergraduate fellows. The institute seeks to provide a stimulating scholarly environment in which to pursue research, develop new interdisciplinary connections, and network with others. Postdoctoral appointees join lectures and conferences as appropriate to their research and may play a role in the planning of working groups and events.
